Vol.2: Cause of ED: Oxidant stress

I previously explained that there was a social stress which related to the sympathetic nerve and a cause of ED. So, there is also another cause which is called “oxidant stress”. Whichever it is, it sounds like something not so good if you don’t know what it actually is, doesn’t it?
Oxidization is defined as a chemical reaction emitting electrons, and also the reduction is a reaction involving receiving electrons. When explaining this simply, things such as metals get rusted or old oil turns brown, and these are oxidant reactions. It still sounds that it is something bad for our body, doesn’t it? However, the human body is oxidizing daily, using oxygen to make energy in the body. But excessive or lack of exercise, smoking, unbalanced diet, metabolic syndrome and so on results in having excessive “active-oxygen” which is a very strong oxidized substance in the body, so then the inside of the body leans to the oxidant side too much. This condition is called “oxidant stress”.
The oxidant stress inhibits the production of nitric-monoxide (Ntitric oxide: NO) by blocking the vessels and nerves. I’ll talk about NO another time, so the decrease of NO doesn’t only cause arteriosclerosis but also causes the condition on which vessels become harder to be dilated. Therefore, the penile bloodstream gets decreased and it makes getting an erection more difficult. In other words, it can cause ED easier. When the situation like this is happening, even if you reduce your mental stress, it is impossible to expect the improvement in ED. Well, what should you do in this case? It’s possible to say that you should reduce the oxidant stress, which means quitting smoking or trying moderate exercise, and improving your diet and so on, will help to improve your ED. After all, what you can do is to get the production of NO to increase, isn’t it? The ED curatives such as Viagra, Levitra and Cialis and so on which are called PDE5 inhibitor are working on increasing NO production in the vessels and it’s possible to improve ED.
Incidentally, F. Murad, R. Furchgott and L. Ignarro who discovered NO won a Nobel Prize in the field of physiology and medicine in 1992. With the discovery of NO, Viagra was developed and the ED treatment was dramatically improved over the last 20 years. In fact, there was no effective treatment for ED, before Viagra was launched. We must appreciate these three Nobel Prize winners once again, don’t we? In addition, my graduation thesis was about NO, too. So I must appreciate them (funny, isn’t it?).
I think that the ED treatment will become more popular in the future. So I’m glad to be of help to you. Also NO is utilized in various medical fields. I’d like to talk about these some other time!
